Equal opportunities

Equal opportunity for all is a central belief of the modern Civil Service. The National Archives reflect this with our commitment to fairness in employment opportunity for both sexes, for all races and ages, and for the disabled. We believe that our workforce should be, and is, representative of the society it serves.

Race equality scheme

The Government first legislated against race discrimination in the 1960s. The legislation was extended in the Race Relations Acts of 1968 and 1976. The 1976 act outlawed race discrimination in employment, training, education, housing, the supply of goods, facilities and services and some other specified activities, including public appointments made by ministers and Government departments.

Disability equality scheme

As a result of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005, all public bodies have to publish a Disability Equality Scheme. An important aspect of such schemes is consultation with disabled people, and comments and views are therefore particularly welcome.

Services to the people of Wales

As The National Archives for Wales, we recognise our duty to provide certain additional services to the people of Wales, including members of the public, records and archives professionals and the Welsh administration. These services are set out in the following policy document which is available in English and Welsh.

Below is a list of documents available in Welsh on our website

National Collections Strategy

The National Collections Strategy was launched at the Society of Archivists' Conference in August 2008, with the start of a three-month consultation asking for feedback on the strategy's vision, aims and principles and suggestions for its successful implementation.  The consultation formally ended on 30 November 2008, and both the report on the findings and the final version of the strategy are available online:
